SKF India Industrial is the demerged industrial bearings arm of SKF India Limited, separated in December 2024, manufacturing tapered roller, cylindrical roller and deep-groove ball bearings plus unitized bearing-housing-seal assemblies for OEMs in wind, railways, metals, tractors and heavy industries, alongside a distribution/aftermarket channel and contract manufacturing for the SKF India automotive business. The money is made in two distinct pools: OEM sales at roughly 51% of FY26 revenue carry lower margins but seed long-term aftermarket annuities, while distribution at roughly 35% carries high double-digit margins. Exports contribute about 6% and sales to SKF India about 4%. Competition is described as intense at OEMs, and the margin structure reflects that reality: reported PBT margin was 9.5% in Q4 FY26, or 11.5% adjusted for one-time demerger costs of INR 183 million, versus a guided normalization to around 13%. For a manufacturer, this is an average-to-decent margin profile today, not an exceptional one, which frames the entire investment case as a margin-recovery and capacity story rather than a premium-franchise story.
The durability question is answered less by brand than by qualification cycles and integration depth. The railway business illustrates the barrier best: the company co-developed a unitized bearing-housing-seal solution with the railway department that raised axle load from 18 tons to 21 tons and extended maintenance intervals from roughly 1 million km to 1.2 million km, with testing extending from 130 km/h toward 180 km/h on the Vande Bharat platform. That kind of design-in work is not easily displaced. Similarly, a win of almost INR 32.5 crores with one of India's largest tractor makers came from designing customer-specific tapered and cylindrical roller bearings from the platform design stage itself, embedding SKF into the product architecture. Access to the global SKF factory network for sourcing when local volumes are insufficient adds a replication hurdle no domestic rival matches. That said, OEM pricing negotiations are tough, pass-through of the projected 3-4% raw material escalation plus FX pressure may be incomplete, and the moat is real but not so wide that margins can escape the low-to-mid teens without deliberate localization effort.
The inflection is capacity plus mix restoration. Management has committed INR 800 crores-plus of capex over FY27-FY30 for a new Pune plant with additional DGBB and TRB channels, operational by mid-2028 with all channels transferred and ramp-up completed by end of calendar 2028. Until then, growth is guided at roughly 8% annually through sweating existing assets, job-work arrangements with the SKF India entity, and global sourcing; interim capacity gains are already visible, with Pune TRB throughput lifted from 600,000 to 886,000 pieces via machine upgrades while cutting unit cost nearly 18% and new-product lead time by 35%. By end-2028 into FY29-FY30, the picture is a company growing off a larger base with restored participation in previously exited wind, rail-freight and tractor segments, a portfolio expanding by two to three product lines per quarter including hybrid ceramic bearings for data-centre applications, and EBITDA-equivalent margins guided from 13% after demerger expenses normalize by end-CY2026 to around 15% by FY29-FY30 despite higher depreciation from the new plant.
On walk-talk, only the May 2026 call is available, so delivery verification against prior promises cannot be established from this record. What management committed on that call is specific and dated: PBT margin back to around 13% by end of calendar year 2026 once demerger expenses cease, roughly 15% by FY29-30, growth near 8% until commissioning, net working capital held at 19-20% of sales, and the ACES strategy defined through 2028. Capital allocation is self-funded within the INR 800 crore-plus plan with no dilution flagged, and balance-sheet discipline is already evidenced by net working capital falling 2.8% sequentially to 18.7% of sales, driven by inventory reduction from 16.9% to 16.0% of sales, alongside a significant Q4 cash flow jump. Pricing actions have been taken in the distribution channel, with tougher negotiation expected on OEM pass-through.
Earnings visibility rests on a quantified path: roughly 8% top-line compounding to the mid-2028 plant commissioning, then acceleration as new DGBB/TRB channels ramp, with margins stepping from an adjusted ~11.5% now to ~13% by end-CY2026 and ~15% by FY29-FY30. For this to hold, three things must be true: distributor channel recovery, since shipments were held back and volume shifted due to outstanding payments and distribution fell from ~38% to ~32% of quarterly mix; sustained wind momentum after +91.0% QoQ deliveries to ZF and Suzlon and metals orders to Tata Steel and SAIL; and on-time execution of the Pune transfer by end-2028. The tension in the data is adverse mix: OEM-heavy revenue lifts growth but dilutes margin, and management attributes this to temporary distributor corrections rather than structural erosion. The single falsifier is the margin bridge: if adjusted PBT margin is not visibly tracking toward 13% by end-CY2026, the localization-led thesis fails and the business reverts to a sub-13% industrial average performer carrying elevated depreciation.
