Analysis: Raymond Limited

Growth thesis

Raymond Limited, post its realty demerger, is an engineering company operating through two main subsidiaries, each roughly 66.3 percent owned by the parent: JK Maini Global Aerospace, which machines precision components for aero engines, landing gear, structures and hydraulics, and JK Maini Precision Technology, which supplies transmission gearboxes, hybrid drivetrain parts and complex assemblies to global OEMs. Aerospace contributes over 75 percent of its products to engine programs, including more than 350 part numbers on the LEAP engine alone, spread across 25-plus customers on narrow-body and wide-body platforms. The money shows up in the margins: aerospace earned a 22.3 percent EBITDA margin on INR392 crore of revenue in FY26 and 21.2 percent in Q1 FY27 despite absorbing full in-quarter R&D write-offs, while precision auto expanded from 11 percent in FY25 to 13.4 percent in FY26 and 13.8 percent in Q1 FY27. For a manufacturer, sustained low-twenties EBITDA margins in aerospace sit firmly in the exceptional band, and the consolidated 15.9 percent margin in Q1 FY27 confirms the blend is improving rather than eroding.

The economics rest on qualification barriers that take years to replicate. First-time supplier approval in aerospace runs about two years, Raymond's own progression through criticality levels took five years each from N4 to N3 and N3 to N2, and management states competitors need four to seven years to build an equivalent business because the high-mix, low-volume culture does not transfer easily from auto ancillary. Some parts carry self-approval status where customers do not re-inspect, and the share-of-wallet model moves parts from 35 percent to 65 percent of customer allocation after demonstrated quality and on-time delivery, with more than half of parts already at the higher level. Demand exceeds supply such that RFQ selection is filtered by margin and return criteria rather than taken opportunistically. This is not a commodity converter; it is a certified niche with switching costs embedded in multi-year contracts.

The inflection is visible in the order book and the calendar. Between the May 2026 call, when the aerospace order book stood at INR2,350 crore over five years, and the August 2026 call, the horizon was extended to ten years at INR5,960 crore plus, implying the five-year component grew roughly 17 percent sequentially to INR2,765 crore, with an active RFQ pipeline of INR1,632 crore. The existing facility's revenue capacity has been raised above INR600 crore under the Parivartan improvement mandate. The greenfield plant at Gudipalli in Andhra Pradesh targets commercial production by late 2027 within a five-year capex program of roughly INR930 crore to INR1,000 crore split between aerospace and precision auto, followed by up to six months of customer approvals, meaningful contribution through FY28 and an incremental INR150-200 crore of annualized revenue from FY29. Eighteen to twenty-four months out, the business exits FY28 with a second growth leg commissioning, the aftermarket line rolled out in Q2 FY27, a defence strategy due within a quarter or two, medical certification secured on August 7, 2026, and tariff relief from the India-UK CETA effective July 15, 2026 removing duties up to 18 percent on relevant exports.

Management has consistently under-promised and over-delivered. In August 2025 it guided aerospace at high-teens and auto at early-teens growth for FY26; nine-month actuals came in at 34 percent and 12 percent respectively, and FY26 closed with aerospace up 26 percent. It then committed to 25 percent aerospace growth and delivered 40 percent in Q1 FY27. Capex timelines and the near-zero net debt position have held exactly as stated, with a net cash surplus of INR129 crore at June 2026 funding organic expansion internally, while warrants issued provide optional flexibility for inorganic moves across aerospace, auto and defence without committed dilution.

The earnings path is quantified: aerospace compounding at 25 percent from a INR392 crore FY26 base toward the raised INR600 crore-plus existing capacity by FY28, then adding INR150-200 crore from Andhra in FY29 at mature margins targeted near 25 percent, while precision grows around 10-12 percent toward a mature 12-13 percent margin, lifting consolidated EBITDA well above the INR335 crore FY26 level. The Q1 FY27 aerospace margin dip from 23.7 percent to 21.2 percent is operational, driven by R&D fully written off in-quarter, not structural erosion. The single falsifier is the Andhra timeline: if customer approvals stretch materially beyond the stated six months or commercial production slips past late 2027, the FY29 increment delays and the 25 percent commitment breaks. Secondary watchpoints are top-three customer concentration at 40-45 percent and cost inflation in logistics, tooling and wages pressuring individual quarters until offset.

Why is Raymond Limited stock rising?

  • INR930 crore capex over 5 years planned: INR500 crore for Aerospace, INR430 crore for Precision Technology & Auto Components
  • Greenfield Aerospace facility in Andhra Pradesh to commence commercial production by late 2027 (second half FY28)
  • Strategic shift from build-to-print to co-design and value engineering collaborations with global OEMs
  • Targeting addition of 300-350 new components per year; aim to develop one new component per day
  • Aerospace business targeting 25% CAGR growth; existing capacity sufficient until new facility ramps up
