Elgi Equipments is a global air compressor manufacturer with over 90% of revenue from compressors, split roughly 50-50 between India and the rest of the world. It is the number six player in a ~$23 billion global industry where Atlas Copco and Ingersoll Rand control just over half the market. The business model combines equipment sales with an aftermarket that currently contributes 20% of revenue (28% in India, 12-15% outside), giving recurring income that supports relatively stable margins. In FY26, EBITDA margin came in at 15% against a 16% target, and management's five-year plan targets 18% by FY31 with a 35% ROCE. The company also runs distribution businesses in Australia and the US, sells medical compressors under the Patton's brand, and has entered vacuum products via a license with DVP, a 10-12 year incubation program.
The economics persist because of several compounding barriers. First, the installed base grows every year, and aftermarket loyalty is high outside India, with distributors earning their highest profit from service labour. Second, the patented Demand=Match technology delivers 6-17% energy savings for customers and has improved price realization, with 100 units commissioned and the technology standard on all Indian machines since October 2025. Third, backward integration into motor manufacturing has cut motor imports from 33% of the total in 2024 to 5% now, and a new motor range without permanent magnets will complete validation in 6-8 months, reducing China dependency and giving a cost advantage. Fourth, qualification cycles matter: the Siemens VAC10 railway compressor contract moved from development to supply in FY26, and defence high-pressure compressors for naval ships including the aircraft carrier Vikrant demonstrate multi-year trust. That said, the bottom segment of the Indian market faces churn from Chinese low-cost machines, so the economics are not uniform; the company is responding with its own low-cost compressor range launching in India in September 2026 and globally the following year.
The next 18-24 months are defined by a cluster of launches and facility migrations. The low-cost compressor range, designed to counter Chinese competition with a 30-40% price reduction, launches in India in September 2026 and globally the following year. Demand=Match becomes standard on all supplies to Europe, Australia and the US by the middle of the current financial year, covering the premium and mid ranges. In-house dryers covering 20-500 CFM, launched in India, Europe and Australia, will also hit the US in April 2026. The new motor range arrives within 12-18 months. On capacity, the MK2 factory's first phase is complete, the global service centre went live in April 2026, and phase 2 is now underway, absorbing ₹120-130 crore of the ~₹200 crore FY27 capex. Inventory rationalisation, which has dragged on, is targeted to bring forecasting accuracy from 60-70% to 90%, with inventory cover normalising from about 6 months to 3-3.5 months by Q3 FY27. By mid-2028, at an 11.3% CAGR, revenue should run around $550-600 million, with Europe at least break-even after its Q4 FY26 break-even, and aftermarket share climbing as the US and European installed base grows.
Management's track record is mixed. The $450 million FY26 revenue target at constant FX was surpassed (actual $487 million constant, $440 million floater), and Europe, guided to break-even, delivered exactly that in Q4 FY26. However, the EBITDA margin for FY26 fell to 15% against a 16% target, and near-term quarterly misses were repeated: Q3 FY26 EBITDA came in at ₹1,400 crore against a guided ₹2,000 crore, and a similar shortfall occurred in Q1. The low-cost compressor launch slipped from Q1 FY27 to Q2 (now set for September 2026), and inventory normalisation took six months versus a three to three and a half month target. The company is investing 1.5-2% of top line in go-to-market, IT and finance transformation, with these costs expected to halve in 1.5-2 years. Cash conversion remains strong at 100% of EBITDA, capex for the campus shift is on schedule, and there is no dilution planned.
The earnings path to FY31 is explicit: $750 million revenue, 18% EBITDA margin, 35% ROCE. The near-term bridge is clearer: tariff headwinds (now 25% on exports from Italy and India, down from 50%) are neutralised, commodity price increases are 80% passed on via a June 2026 price correction, and the demand-led mix shift toward higher-energy-efficiency products should lift gross margins. The key watchpoint is whether management can convert its backlog of initiatives into execution that matches guidance. The most direct falsifier would be a second consecutive year of EBITDA margin below 15% or any delay in the September 2026 low-cost compressor launch. Also, inquiry levels are strong but conversion times are lengthening amid West Asia geopolitical uncertainty, which could mute Q1 FY27 volume. If management delivers on its stated commitments, the business will have a broader product portfolio, a bigger aftermarket base, and a lower cost structure by mid-2028, but the pattern of optimistic guidance followed by walk-downs warrants a discount.
