Growth thesis

Ajax Engineering manufactures concrete construction equipment, primarily self-loading concrete mixers (SLCMs), along with concrete pumps, batching plants, slip form pavers, and spares and services. SLCM is the profit engine: it contributed INR388 crore of revenue in Q1 FY27, while non-SLCM added INR48 crore and spares and services INR39 crore. Ajax holds 75.1% retail market share in SLCM in Q1 FY27, up from 69% a year earlier and 73.5% for full FY26, with the closest competitor losing about 4 percentage points of share in that same quarter. The niche is concentrated, and Ajax leads with a 5-6% price premium over rivals. EBITDA margin was 12.5% in Q1 FY27, 12.6% for FY26, and 15.3% in FY25, so the business is above average but not exceptional; its quality shows up in long-run returns, with ROCE and ROE averaging over 25% and 18% respectively over the past five years.

The economics persist because of the installed base and distribution network, not because of patents or raw material control. Ajax has an active machine population of roughly 35,000 to 38,000 units, more than 60 dealers, and a service network that makes the 5-6% price premium rational for customers who value uptime. During the CEV-4 to CEV-5 transition, Ajax was first to deploy compliant products and did so without quality issues, which helped recover share from around 70% to 73.5% in FY26 and to 75.1% in Q1 FY27. In a quarter where industry SLCM registrations fell 27%, Ajax volumes fell only 21%, and state-level share gains were dramatic: Gujarat went from 71% to 82%, Rajasthan from 66% to 86%, and Odisha from 61% to 88%. Spares and services revenue still grew 6.2% YoY in Q1 FY27 even with lower machine running hours, and the company is pushing annual maintenance contracts on its installed base, creating recurring revenue and switching costs.

The inflection is the commissioning of the new manufacturing facility in Q1 FY27, which expands capacity for non-SLCM and supports export growth. Management expects H2 FY27 to bring demand recovery, given the industry's typical 40:60 H1:H2 revenue split and state-specific momentum in Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka and a possible Uttar Pradesh election impulse. By FY27, Udaan compact mixer volumes are targeted to triple from the 202 units sold in FY26; Q1 FY27 already sold 121 units, with around 35-40 units in the latest month. Exports, which were 9% of Q1 FY27 revenue and grew 40% in FY26, are guided to grow at a 30% CAGR over three years, with Algeria, Morocco and Nigeria representing 38% of shipments. Non-SLCM is targeted at 10-15% growth for FY27, with B2B wins at UltraTech, JSW, ACC and J. Kumar expected to convert into meaningful revenue in the next two to three quarters. Eighteen to twenty-four months out, the business should look more diversified: exports and non-SLCM should contribute a higher share of revenue, Udaan should be an established bottom-of-pyramid product, and the ARGO 4000 launch in Q2 FY27 should fill a portfolio gap. With the new capacity already in place, volume growth should carry operating leverage, and Q4 FY26 demonstrated 15.1% EBITDA margin when volumes and mix improved.

Management walk-talk is mixed but improving. On the Feb 2026 call, they expected FY26 volume growth to be early double digits and the fifth plant to commission in H2 FY26; by the May 2026 call, FY26 SLCM volumes were flat-to-down and the plant shifted to Q1 FY27. That is a missed timeline. Yet they protected the core: SLCM market share recovered to 73.5% for FY26, Q4 FY26 EBITDA margin reached 15.1% after a 2% price increase taken in January, net working capital fell to 21 days, and cash stood at INR1,121 crore as of March 2026, exceeding INR1,100 crore by June. Guidance has been upgraded from the earlier modest 2% growth expectation for nine months FY26 to mid-to-early double-digit revenue growth for FY27, with exports of 20-25% and a medium-term EBITDA margin corridor of 13-15%. Capital allocation is conservative: the company is evaluating price hikes in a calibrated way, targeting working capital of 25-30 days, and has said it may use its cash for M&A in the latter half of FY27 rather than diluting shareholders.

The earnings path is visible: if FY27 revenue grows at mid-to-early double digits and EBITDA margin moves from 12.5% toward the 13-15% corridor, EBITDA growth should outpace revenue because the fixed-cost base and the new plant are already in place. Q4 FY26's 15.1% margin shows the operating level available at improved volumes. The key watchpoint is H2 FY27 order momentum and pricing discipline. Management itself says Q2 FY27 will be challenging and that 12.5% margin may be hard to hold, because government infrastructure spending remains below budgeted allocations and contractors face payment delays from certain state governments. Maharashtra volumes have fallen from roughly 900 units to about 430 units over two years, and Madhya Pradesh is also weak. The falsifier is therefore a continued decline in industry registrations beyond Q1 FY27; if the 27% industry drop persists, the 13-15% margin target slips again. The tension between Q1 margin decline and market share gain resolves as operational, not structural, because gross margin improved in Q4 FY26 and share expanded to 75.1% even while competitors undercut pricing.

Why is AJAX Engineering Ltd stock rising?

  • Targeting mid to early double-digit revenue growth for FY27
  • Aiming to triple Udaan volumes in FY27 compared to FY26
  • Export growth target of 20-25% for FY27, conditional on global conditions
  • Medium-term margin improvement goal to return to 13-15% EBITDA margin
  • Price hike strategy continuation; expect to cover cost increases by Q1 FY27
