Growth thesis

Dachepalli Publishers is an educational publisher that sells textbooks, digital learning tools, and stationery to schools across India, generating most of its revenue from textbook sales to roughly 13,000 schools. It also runs an e-commerce platform, Pelican Edu Supply, through which schools procure all academic supplies, and has begun in-house notebook manufacturing. The company sits at the textbook creation and distribution point, with its own sales force reaching schools directly; distributors handle logistics only. The publishing industry is fragmented, with Dachepalli holding a low single-digit share across its operating states, yet the business earns a high PAT margin of 17-18 percent, reflecting the multi-year prescription cycle of textbooks and the low incremental cost of adding digital content to an existing print relationship.

The economics persist because once a textbook is prescribed, it typically remains in use for three to four years, creating a recurring revenue stream and an entry point for cross-selling other products. Dachepalli bundles a free learning management system with its textbooks, funded by a small price increase, which raises switching costs for schools and acts as a barrier against edtech rivals. Its move into notebook manufacturing is backward integration that should lift gross margins and improve quality control, while the existing printing infrastructure can support up to INR300 crores of turnover without major new capex, giving the company fixed-cost leverage as volumes grow.

The immediate inflection is the scaling of Pelican Edu Supply, which has grown from 3 schools last year to 50 schools this year, with ticket size per school rising from INR1 lakh to INR40 lakhs via a direct-to-parent model. Management has secured 100 more schools and expects 100-150 schools next year; at the current average ticket size, that alone could add INR40-60 crores of revenue within 12-18 months, on top of the roughly INR130-140 crores turnover guided for FY27. Combined with in-house notebook production ramping up and a planned push in newer states where the company holds only about 1 percent market share versus a 5 percent target, the business looks positioned to reach INR220-250 crores turnover in the next two to three years, while sustaining PAT margins around 17-18 percent.

Management’s track record on earlier calls is limited to this latest August 2026 concall, but the numbers presented show delivery: Q1 FY27 total income rose 159 percent year on year to INR45.18 crores, with textbook sales of about INR30 crores and Pelican contributing INR15 crores. The company has been prudently scaling Pelican at 100-150 schools rather than 500-1,000 to avoid supply chain failures, and has funded its capex from internal accruals, leaving the balance sheet clean. However, guidance is inconsistent across the call—FY27 turnover was stated both as INR130-140 crores and INR220-250 crores—so the credibility of the higher figure is uncertain until later quarters provide a clearer trajectory.

The quantified earnings path based on the more conservative guidance is roughly INR135 crores revenue for FY27 and a PAT margin of 17-18 percent, implying net profit near INR23 crores. If the company achieves the INR220-250 crores target by FY29, net profit could double even with modest margin erosion. The critical falsifier is execution on Pelican’s scale-up: a single large school cluster facing supply chain problems could damage relationships and stall the cross-selling engine. Also watch receivable seasonality, as about 7-10 percent of receivables typically take over six months to collect, and raw material invoicing timing can distort quarterly EBITDA margins. As long as these operational risks remain contained, the 18-24 month picture is a company that has more than doubled turnover while maintaining its high-margin publishing core.
